WINTER IN AND OUTSIDE THE ALPS
For the winter lover, 2021 starts well with some fresh snow in the western Alps! On Saturday, some more snow will fall on the southern flanks. Luckily winter can also be found in many other parts of Europe, so in many cases, traveling is not needed to find snow. At the beginning of next week, it will mostly be quiet and dry and it remains cold. However, especially in Italy, some snow is possible.Β
This morning, some snow can be expected in Switzerland, France, and western Italy! Later today, more areas in Italy will see some fresh snow. Locally, 30 centimeters of snow will fall in total. The snow line will vary between 400-800 meters. In the lowest valleys, it will be 1 or 2 degrees Celsius, but in most areas, the temperature will be below zero. At 2000 meters it is very cold with temperatures of about minus 15 degrees.
After a cold night with temperatures below minus 10 in some valleys, a bit more snow will fall on Saturday in southern Switzerland and across the border in Italy. In other areas, it is mostly dry with only a little wind.
Snow in large parts of Europe
Snow can also be found in lower mountain ranges in Europe, for example in the Ardennes and in Sauerland. Some more snow will fall coming days and remains there as it keeps freezing during the day. Even in northern Spain, middle Italy, and the Balkans, it becomes white above 1000-1500 meters.
Winter persists in the Alps
In the first part of next week some snow is still possible in northern Italy. In the rest of the Alps, it is mostly dry. The temperatures will not change a lot. At the end of the week, the snow chances increase mainly in the French Alps. Read more about that next week!
