VAL DI SOLE – AMAZING ITALY
We were invited by Val di Sole to experience the area and were very excited to go to skiing in Italy for the first time. We saw and heard a lot of good stuff about skiing in Italy, but we had to experience it ourselves before we could give an opinion about it. And believe us, we are positively surprised!
On a Friday night we drove from the Netherlands to Commezadura (Val di Sole) province Trentino – Italy. A lot of people think that Italy is to far. But it is only a 1080 km drive. So distance is not a problem at all.
We were staying in Commezzadura at La Moretina a 3 star accomodation and had our own appartment, just perfect! Commezzadura is a small town but has a direct connection to the skiarea with the Daolasa lift. It was a 5 minute walk from our appartment to the lift and it took about 13 minutes to go to 2000 meter and directly you are in an amazing white world. What a difference with the green town we were a few minutes ago!
Val di Sole area.
Val di Sole also known as Valle di Sole (sun valley) is an area in the Italian province Trentino. Vale di Sole is another name for Val Vermiglio the west-east running valley of the river Noce, and some side valleys, including the Val di Peio to the Ortler. The Val Vermiglio includes the towns of Vermiglio, Peio, Dimaro and Croviana
The Val Vermiglio runs to the Tonalepas. On the other side of the pass (and in line with the Val Vermiglio) begins the valley of the Oglio that runs to Edolo. In the northwest the area is bordered by the Ortler massif with the protected nature reserve Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio, in the southwest by the Adamello massif with the Parco Naturale Adamello Brenta National Park. In the south of the area lies the ski resort Madonna di Campiglio, just over the Campo Carlo Magno, a pass to the Val Rendena. To the east, the region ends at Cagnò, where the main valley turns to the south before arriving at the Adige valley north of Trento.
Skiarea Campiglio Dolomiti di Brenta Val di Sole Val Rendena
Because of the direct lift connection between Folgarida Marilleva, Madonna di Campiglio and Pinzolo, without ever having to take your skis off, skiers can ski in a single ski area with more than 150 km of slopes and 58 lifts right in the heart of the Brenta Dolomites. There are so many beautifull routes and sceneries. You can go to every side of the mountain.
In the week that we were in Val di Sole we saw all the directions we could go. One of the most beautifull days was the one we went from the Daolosa lift to Val Rendena – Pinzolo. A total of 60 km’s that day, what a blast we had. Also important to tell, that the sun was shining every day! That made it absolutely a really special week too!
Ponte di Legno – Tonale
Passo Tonale offers 28 modern lifts with 100 km of slopes. Skiing, not only in winter. This area guarantees the opportunity to ski in late autumn and well into spring, thanks to the ski lifts on the famous Presena Glacier at a height of 3000 meters. If you have the Skirama pas, you can also ski in Pontedilegno – Tonale. It is only a 30 minute drive from Commezzadura to there. Skirama Dolomiti Adamello Brenta is 380 km’s in total. It includes the ski resorts: Campiglio, Pinzolo, Folgarida, Marilleva, Peio, Passo Tonale –Ponte di Legno, Andalo-Fai della Paganella, Monte Bondone and Folgaria-Lavarone. It is one of the major ski carousels in southers Alps in the Brenta Dolimites.
The first day we went to the Presena Glacier. Beautifull slopes there, amazing view up on 3.000 meters and lots of sun.
We were invited to attend the Ice Music Festival. It is a unique event, it is held in a large igloo at an altitude of 2.600 meters at the Presena Glacier. The instruments are all made of ice by Tim Linhart. The instruments are semi transparent and the sound them is really clear and beautifull. It was an extraordinairy experience. If you get the change, you must see this.
The second day we were in Passo Tonale, we took all the lifts on the opposite site of the Passo Presena. This area is also used for the ski lessons or in weekends for the race teams that are training on a few slopes.
Staying in Val di Sole.
We were staying in La Moretina, Commezzadura as I mentioned before. But there are many possibilities from appartments to hotels in all price categories in all the villages in Vale di Sole. It depends on the wishes you have. In Vale di Sole there is also a free ski bus that can take you directly to for example Madonna di Campiglio, Marilleva, Folgarida or Peio. So the whole area is easy accessible.
Eating and drinking in Val di Sole.
The food is fantastic in Italy. Very delicious and also pricewise it is very affordable. The prices are lower than in the Netherlands if you are talking about the pizza, pasta and also meat dishes. Pizzeria’s are in everywhere no matter how small the village is. Groceries are pricewise the same as in the Netherlands. Drinks on slopes and bars are the same as in the Netherlands.
