REFRESH FRIDAY: SHANE McCONKEY
Shane McConkey (1969 – 2009), a true skiing legend. McConkey was born in Vancouver, but later on lived in Squaw Valley, California. As a kid and teenager, he was an exceptional and often winning alpine racer and freestyle skier. But what he is most famous for, is his part in numerous ski films and the development of extreme sports.
He combined freeride skiing with base jumping, always widening his horizon, trying out new things. He contributed to ski design as well. In 2000, he strapped on a pair of water skis in Alaska. A year later, the Volant Spatula was born: the first ski that had ‘rocker’.
He died in March 2009, when a ski-base jump in the Italian Dolomites went tragically wrong.
Shane McConkey was awarded multiple honorary titles and in 2011, he was posthumously inducted into the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame.
