RARE SNOW AMOUNTS IN SPAIN
It is cold in a large part of Europe, but in coming days winter weather can especially be found where you would not expect it. The islands of Spain are covered with a nice layer of snow and the temperatures are extremely low. In the Alps, it is cold as well, but no large snow dumps are expected there. Halfway next week the chance of snow increase in the northern parts of the Alps.
Lots of snow in Spain
In Spain, it is way colder than usual. Above 500-1000 meters of height snow will fall in the inlands. In the mountains around Madrid, up to 70 centimeters of snow may fall coming days. These are exceptional snow amounts for this region. During the days it is a few degrees above zero, but the night temperatures are about -10 degrees there. The night from Wednesday to Thursday was extremely cold with even -35 degrees measured in the Picos de Europa, a mountain ridge in the north of Spain.
Cold and dry in the Alps
In the Alps, it is also cold. Last night the temperatures locally dropped to 20 degrees below zero in parts of Switzerland. Today and on the weekend the temperatures generally stay below zero in the valleys. There is a variety of clouds and sun. Regionally some fog could occur. On Saturday some snow will fall in the Balkans and maybe Carinthia will get some light snow as well.
Also, winter next week
Monday and Tuesday, the weather will remain relatively cold and it will be as good as dry. From Wednesday there are snow chances again, especially in the northern parts of the Alps. The temperature forecast becomes uncertain. Possibly it becomes milder, but the low temperatures may also continue.
