Lots of snow on the way to the Alps
Good news for snow lovers! After a mild period, the Alps will face a weather reversal. Temperatures will drop over the next few days, and with lots of snow on the way, winter will return fully to the Alps. You can read how much snow is expected in this weather forecast.
Currently, the Alps are still experiencing mild and dry weather conditions. In some ski villages maxima of 15 degrees were reached earlier this week, the snow quality deteriorated as a result. From Friday, however, different weather is on the cards.
This weekend low pressure systems from the Atlantic Ocean will regularly move over the Alps, bringing lots of clouds and precipitation with them. Colder air will gradually flow in, resulting in a lowering snow line. Initially, snow will only fall higher up in the mountains, but especially on Sunday and Monday, the valleys can also get ready for a fresh pack of powder.
How much powder will fall?
At the weekend, over half a meter of fresh snow could locally fall high in the mountains. In the valleys, the amounts will then remain limited to a few centimeters. For now, most of the snow seems to fall on Sunday evening and into the night on Monday. The exact amount is still somewhat uncertain, but some calculations come up with more than a meter of fresh powder for the mountains until Monday. The valleys can also expect a good amount.
What will the weather do next?
Next Tuesday the weather seems to get temporarily calm down a bit. If it will stay dry then, the conditions will be perfect for skiing. As temperatures in many valleys will then be around freezing, the slopes will remain good. Throughout the week, it seems to get a bit warmer, but that is still uncertain.
