FORECAST FRIDAY: DRY AND MILD, BUT COLDER TREND
Everyone who likes huge snow dumps needs to have a bit of patience. At the moment, the Alps face dry and relatively mild weather. Only Austria will see some snowflakes Sunday evening. From Tuesday the temperature drops, but precipitation stays away. The weather models are uncertain about the forecast for Christmas. Mild air seems to enter the Alps with rain and snow, but possibly the cold air stays, keeping the snow line low.
Quiet and mild weather this weekend
In the coming days, we can expect mild and mostly dry weather in the Alps without much wind. It can be cloudy, but especially higher up in the mountains the sun could shine brightly. The freezing line is at about 1000 meters in height and the temperatures in the valleys are between 4 and 10 degrees. On Sunday evening and on the night to Monday, some snow will fall in Austria, especially in Salzburg. Locally a fresh layer of 10 centimeters is possible.
Colder from Tuesday
On Tuesday, cold air from Russia comes closer to the Alps and the temperatures stay below zero in the Eastern half of the Alps. The same is the case in the Ardens and in Sauerland. The recent snow has mostly disappeared, but the snow cannons can prepare the slopes again since it is cold enough. The chances for precipitation are still not very high. Therefore slopes with mostly old snow could become icy.
From Christmas evening on, the forecast becomes very uncertain for the Alps. Possibly mild air enters the Alps again, bringing rain and snow above 1500 meters. However, an optimistic weatherman also sees the opportunity persisting cold air. In that case snow could also fall in the lower valleys! The weather models of the coming days will tell what scenario comes out.
