FORECAST FRIDAY: MILD CONDITIONS IN THE ALPS
Since recent snowy days in the Alps, many people are looking forward to the coming winter sports season. At the moment, winter is in a lower gear with mainly above-zero temperatures. Despite that, it is still nice to enjoy the mountains with some sunshine. In the course of next week, some cold scenarios will be visible on the weather maps. Read about the chances for snow in the coming week and where the most snow can currently be found.
Mild conditions
On Saturday, a little rain or snow is possible on the Northern Alpine ridge, but in the rest of the Alps, it is dry. The Western part of the Alps will have the most sun on Saturday, but in Austria, Sunday is the sunniest day of the weekend. The temperature is 7 degrees in most valleys, for example in Innsbruck. The freezing level is generally higher than 2000 meters. On bright nights the temperature can easily drop to below zero values, enabling the snow cannons to prepare the slopes.
Winter chances after the weekend?
Some precipitation enters the western parts of the Alps on Monday evening or Tuesday morning. This will only result in the snow in ski areas above 2500 meters due to the too-high temperatures. For colder weather, we have to wait at least till the second half of the week. Colder air from the east of Europe will come closer but it is still uncertain if it reaches the Alps and if this will be accompanied by snowfall.
Already much snow in parts of Scandinavia
Good quantities of snow can already be found in parts of Scandinavia, for example in BeitostΓΈlen (900m). Here the freezing line is much lower than in the Alps. More snow will fall in Norway next week, with inland locally 50 centimeters in a few days. However, low areas in the west are still too warm for snow.
