FORECAST FRIDAY: CLOUDS, SNOW AND SUN
After a few days of mostly snowfall on the northern side of the Alps, better weather is on the cards this weekend with dryer conditions and some sunshine. On Sunday evening, new snow is expected, but after Monday sunny weather is on the program in the Alps. Moreover, next week the temperature will rise to very mild maximum values. For winter sports enthusiasts, conditions will be optimal in the coming days, but avalanche danger lurks.
At the moment it’s mostly dry in the Alpine region with a mix of clouds and sun. At 0 degrees around 2000 meters, it is mild for the time of year. Later this afternoon, the clouds and the chance of precipitation will increase. In the evening and during the night on Saturday, a little bit of snow will fall, but not in large amounts. At most, there will be a few centimeters of snow.
Snow between Sunday evening and Monday
On Sundays, it is usually good weather to go outside with clouds and sunshine. Sunday afternoon the clouds will increase and in the evening and in the night to Monday it will snow in more and more places in the Alpine region. Until Monday afternoon, in many places, 20-40 centimeters of fresh snow may fall. The snow line varies between 700 to 1300 meters. High up in the mountains there maybe even some more locally. However, quantities like those of the past few days are not expected. Later in the day, it will become mostly dry.
Avalanche risk in the Alps
Due to a large amount of fallen snow, there is an increased risk of avalanches. Especially the Tirol region in Austria and large parts of Switzerland have currently a very high avalanche risk. Therefore, it is in these higher-risk regions sometimes not wise to ski off-piste.
Mild temperatures and sunny next week
After Monday, blue skies with lots of sunshine are on the agenda in most ski areas. In addition, the temperature rises gradually and in many valleys, the afternoon values reach around 10 degrees. The snow will then thaw, especially in the lower areas. In addition, there is not much wind and despite it still being February, the sun can already be quite intense.
Winter sports in the low mountain range
In Winterberg, the sun will be seen a little less over the next few days. However, snow can be enjoyed and a little snow is expected. On the tops of the Sauerland about 10 centimeters of snow can fall until Sunday.
