SNOW IN THE NORTHWESTERN ALPS
Especially the northern side of the Alps have received already a lot of snow, but more snow is on its way! Switzerland will get the most snow. Also, strong winds are possible on the tops, and therefore the risk of avalanches increases. Luckily snow will also fall in some lower areas, for example in the Netherlands. From Tuesday, milder air enters the Alps, and the snow line increases. In the southwest, some snow and rain could fall.
Most snow in Switzerland
Yesterday already a lot of snow fell on the northwestern side of the Alps. Most snow has fallen in Switzerland with up to 50 centimeters and today locally 20 centimeters could fall again. The snow line is at about 500 meters. In the course of the day, it will become dry everywhere. On the tops, there could be some strong winds with 100-130 km/hour in the French Alps. With much snow and wind, the risk of avalanches increases.
Saturday will be a dry day in most places in the Alps. On Sunday some snow will fall again on the northern side of the Alps from France to Austria. This will result in 20-40 centimeters to the snow layer on some locations. During the nights it can be very cold with minimum temperatures possibly below minus 20 degrees in Switzerland.
Snow in lower areas
Also, the lower parts of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands could see a white landscape this weekend. Also some snowfalls in parts of France, especially in the Vosges. Luckily many people do not have to travel far for some snow. Regionally the first snow of the winter will fall. In the Ardennes, the snow layer is currently about 20 centimeters thick.
Higher temperatures from Tuesday
From Tuesday the wind will come from the southwest and mild air will spread over the Alps. At 500 meters height, it will be around 5 degrees above zero. In the southern part of the French Alps and in western Italy some snow or rain could fall. The snow line will be around 1500 meters, which is much higher than in previous days.
