FORECAST FRIDAY: DRY WEEKEND, BUT SNOW IS COMING

This weekend one can enjoy the sun in the southern Alps. Despite the temperatures above zero, the snow quality is generally good because of today’s snowfall. In Austria some light snowfall is possible. After the weekend the slopes are boosted again with snow north of the main Alpine mountain ridge, mainly in Austria. However, there are strong regional differences in weather. South of the highest mountains, the snowfall is very limited.

Sunny spells in the south

After a snowy Friday on the northern side of the Alps, we will have a weekend with quiet weather and sometimes sunny spells. Especially on the Italian slopes, the sun shines brightly so you can get tanned skin. Most clouds are for Austria and some snowflakes could fall from the sky there. In the afternoon the temperature rises to 5 degrees in the lowest areas with a freezing line between 1000 and 1500 meters in height.

Sunday some snow could fall again in Northern Austria in the morning, but in the afternoon the sun breaks through in a large part of the Alps. It is a few degrees warmer than on Saturday, but the above 1500 meters the snow quality will stay good! In some Swiss valleys around Lugano, it can locally even be 16 degrees because of the foehn effect.

Snow after the weekend, but not everywhere

Cold air enters the Alps from the north on Monday and brings large snow quantities. From Monday till Wednesday the snow can also fall in the valleys. About 50-80 centimeters can fall in Austria above 1500 meters. However, the snow is not divided equally since almost any snow is forecasted for Italy and France. In the whole Alps, the winds are clearly stronger than in the weekend especially higher up.

Also snow in Sauerland and the Harz

The ski area in Winterberg is often too warm for snow, but on Monday snow fill fall there as well! This is a good moment for a small trip because the precipitation will probably turn into the rain again from Wednesday on.
