DISCOVER THE WINTER WONDERLAND OF MYRKDALEN NORWAY
Do you want to experience winter sports in their purest form? Then visit Myrkdalen in Western Norway. Fjords and winter sports come together in a snow-rich area where you have the ski slopes for yourself. Besides skiing and snowboarding, many more activities are possible, such as kite skiing, ski Randonnée, and a boat trip. After your day, you can relax in the Myrkdalen hotel or in one of the apartments.
When visiting Myrkdalen, taking the Flam train is strongly recommended. The start is at the Myrdal train station, along the track between Oslo and Bergen. Myrdal is located 867 meters above sea level and is not accessible by car. Flåm, the destination, is situated along the fjord at sea level and 20 kilometers from Myrdal. The train steeply descends and has 11 stops with a view of snowy mountains and deep valleys.
One of the stops is next to the famous Kjosfossen waterfall. Even though you could hear water clattering down loudly in summer, it was silent this time. Even in March, there were impressive walls full of icicles. Going down, the snow slowly disappeared and we arrived in Flåm.
From Flåm we took the ferry to Gudvangen on the Nærøyfjord. Literally translated this means “narrow fjord” and its scenery was used as inspiration for the movie Frozen. We were lucky to be there during the golden hour and at some parts, the water started to freeze. From the deck, you can make the most beautiful pictures, but you can also enjoy the views from a warm spot inside with a drink.
Most visitors to Myrkdalen are Norwegian, but the area is not yet discovered by many people from other parts of Europe. For that reason, it is a quiet area where you have all space and almost no waiting time for the lifts. Together with the stunning views, this area is definitely worthwhile visiting! You find opportunities for every ski level from beginner to experienced skiers or snowboarders. For advanced winter sporters, you can spend your day on the off-piste slopes! The snow quality is generally good till late in the season because of the northern location.
Apart from ski slopes, there is a huge loipe network for cross-country skiing. Also, you can try some activities you might not have done before, such as kite skiing or ski randonnée.
Food and accommodation
Depending on your wishes, you can choose to book a room in the Myrkdalen hotel, one of the apartments, or a cabin. In the hotel, there are multiple restaurants where you can enjoy a culinary three-course meal, but one can also find a good pizza or pasta. Along the slopes, you can fill your stomach with some local specialties. For corporate groups, there are even conference halls. Therefore the area is suitable for families as well as for business trips.
When to go?
The best period to go in my opinion is the beginning of March, just after the peak of the season. Where the snow in the Alps is mostly molten by then, the circumstances in this region are still very good! Another advantage is the more extended daytime period and higher chances of spring-like weather. In April you are still able to ski, but then the snow quality is slowly decreasing. However, you can also come later in the year for some summer activities, such as mountain biking, fishing, and hiking.
Summarizing, Myrkdalen offers an experience you cannot get anywhere else, with nice ski slopes and fjords next to each other. There is a large variety of activities, suitable for all kinds of groups. Despite that, the area is quiet so you can really immerse yourself in nature and landscape. It is definitely recommended!
