A COLD AND WHITE CHRISTMAS
Many people in the Alps woke up this morning with a white landscape! More snow will come during the day, but no extreme amounts. Also during the day, the temperatures are below zero. On Second Christmas day, it will become dry and often the sun shines. In other areas in Europe more snow will fall than in the Alps, for example in the Pyrenees. After Christmas, the snow chances increase mainly on the southern flanks of the Alps.
Especially on the northern and western side of the Alps a layer of fresh snow has fallen last night, even in many valleys. Most snow falls in the French Alps and in Switzerland with locally 20 centimeters of fresh snow. Today some more centimeters will fall in Switzerland, but on most places it is dry. The temperatures generally stay below zero. On the tops of the French Alps, strong wind gusts of more than 120 km/hour may occur.
After a cold night with minimum temperatures of around -10 degrees, Second Christmas day will be dry and sometimes sunny with little wind. In the valleys there may be some fog in the morning. It stays cold and the freezing level will not be higher than 500 meters.
More snow outside the Alps
The Pyrenees will get 30 centimeters of snow and also the Apennines receive more snow than the Alps with locally 40 centimeters. Even lower areas, such as the Ardennes could become white during Christmas. On Sunday, the south of Norway will have a large snow dump and 80 centimeters of fresh snow is possible.
Snow chances in Italy after Christmas
On Sunday, the wind turns to southern direction and mainly in France and Italy the snow chances increase. Especially on Monday a lot of snow could fall in Carinthia and the northeast of Italy, possibly more than a meter! Because of the milder air, the freezing level climbs to 500-1000 meters. From Tuesday on, no large snow dumps are expected. It will probably stay relatively cold and dry.
A large snow dump on Monday in Carinthia and the northeast of Italy.
