SNOW IN ITALY DURING THE WEEKEND
At the moment we can find high temperatures in the Alps with locally even 16 degrees due to foehn. Friday it is mostly dry, but on Saturday snow could fall above 1500 meters height, especially in Italy. More snow will fall on Sunday with a snowline will decrease till 500-1000 meters at the start of next week. Real winter can be found in the Netherlands and the northern half of Germany with low temperatures and blizzard conditions.
High temperatures
Today and tomorrow we can find mild weather all over the Alps. On Friday it is dry, and especially in Austria there is some sunshine. The freezing level is around 1500-2000 meters height. In the lower areas the temperatures are very soft with more than 10 degrees. With the foehn winds it could even be 16 degrees in valleys in the northern Alps. On Saturday evening rain fall in the southwestern Alps and snow above 1800 meters.
Snow in Italy
Sunday morning the precipitation expands to the east and will arrive in southern Tyrol. In Italy 20 centimeters will fall in many parts and possibly 30 centimeters around Lago Maggiore. The zero-degree line will decrease to 700 meters in the northwest of Switzerland, but in other areas precipitation will only fall as snow above 1000-1500 meters.
Real winter further north
From Sunday onwards, arctic air will be present further north in the Netherlands and northern Germany. There will be severe weather with blizzard conditions and temperatures around 5 degrees below zero. In the Harz and in Sauerland it is cold enough for snow and on Sunday a fresh snow layer of 30 centimeters could be present. Also Czechia is mainly in the cold air and will turn white.
Mostly dry after the weekend
On Monday some snow is regionally possible, especially in Austria, but also in Switzerland. The following days are probably dry in the Alps with a mix of clouds and sun. It is relatively cold with a freezing level of 500-1000 meters. The weather in the second half of the week is uncertain with both cold and warm air close by. Next friday there is a new forecast, so hopefully more will be clear at that time!
